  15. Welcome to VMiX 386, protected mode multitasking and multiuser DOS extender.

  17. We assume that you do not wish to go through a lot of documentation before
  18. starting to use VMiX, so we have included the file VMiX.DOC as a quick
  19. startup guide (Refer to the VMiX STARTUP - SYSTEM OPTIONS and QUICK START
  20. TO VMiX MULTITASKING documentation sections!!!).  An on-line manual is
  21. included as TECHREF.DOC, however the printed documentation will usually be
  22. more complete.

  25.      VMiX is a multitasking and multiuser environment for IBM PC's
  26.      and PS/2's (PC, XT, AT, PS/2, EISA) compatibles.
  27.  
  28.      - Graphics and text modes are supported by the shareware version.
  29.      - Compatible with MSDOS 6.0 and DRDOS 6 relocation to high memory.
  30.      - Loader utility for moving TSRs or VMiX to upper memory.
  31.      - Load VMiX to upper memory without robbing DOS of precious space.
  32.      - Run communications software while executing other tasks.

  34.      A platform for point-of-sale systems, distributed database access,
  35.      process control, uplinks and downlinks.

  37.      - Distributed multitasking within a NET of several linked VMiX hosts.
  38.      - Flip console screens w/single hot key, and additionally 4 terminals.
  39.      - Start new windows by pressing Shift-Enter to end a command line.

  42. The Shareware Version is bigger and slower than the 386 version because
  43. it is coded in 8086 code, since it must run in all 8088 PCs, as well as,
  44. 286's and 386's, and because it carries about 10Kb of registration related
  45. dead wait.  The Shareware Version also can not be as efficient when using
  46. extended memory for virtual tasks, has limited size paging tables, and does
  47. not include the advanced terminal drivers, but a user without a chronometer
  48. might not be able to tell the difference.  Other than those limitations, the
  49. shareware version is identical in capability to the Commercial Version.

  51. The Commercial Version is coded in 386 code, hence it is smaller and faster.
  52. Both versions support up to eight tasks and will use extended memory space,
  53. if available.  The Commercial Version will not run in 8088 or 8086 PCs, so
  54. an 8086 version is also included as a separate file in the Registered
  55. and Documented Package.

  57. The user interface is the same, regardless of the processor detected in
  58. your PC or AT (8088, 8086, 80286, or 80386/486).

  108. INSTALLATION:
  109.  
  110.        1) Create a VMiX sub-directory on your hard disk.
  111.        2) Copy the files in the distribution disk to the VMiX directory.
  112.        3) Execute the self-extracting archive VMiX???.EXE to install.
  113.        4) The two other archives are optional, and can be extracted,
  114.           in similar fashion to sub-directories of your choice.
  115.        5) Read VMiX.DOC for general operating instructions, or start
  116.           the program using its default configuration by typing VM_BOOT
  117.           at the DOS command line.
  118.        6) Study the file VMiX.INI and add or uncomment any lines you
  119.           need, in the file's [startup] section.

  121.           The enclosed sample batch files will allow you to start VMiX
  122.           in 4 typical configurations:

  124.                gomenus.bat  - starts the command shell and a second shell
  125.                               running a pull-down menus interface to VMiX
  126.                               (press Shift-Tab to switch the video/Kbd
  127.                                between the two tasks).
  128.  
  129.                gomtdos.bat  - starts the command shell and a second shell
  130.                               running a pull-down menus interface to VMiX
  131.                               (however, a DOS look and feel is used).
  132.  
  133.                goremote.bat - starts the command shell at the console and
  134.                               configures VMiX to accept user logins at all
  135.                               COMM ports (2400 baud).

  137.                goloadup.bat - starts VMiX in low memory, to load the memory
  138.                               manager, then relocates VMiX to upper memory,
  139.                               above 640KB to conserve DOS area space.
